Happy Birthday to Steve Schanuel! (1933-2014)

Dear visitors and friends–We are thinking about Steve Schanuel’s birthday on July 14, 2025. (He would be 92). Steve was a close friend and collaborator of Bill’s, and also a dear family friend, and a beloved member of the mathematical communities in Buffalo, NY and wherever he visited around the world.

We thought you would enjoy this photo of Steve playing music with other mathematicians and a biologist. The performance was part of the unforgettable final banquet and conference on Categories and Continuum Physics held at the University at Buffalo. (Steve was a co-editor of the 1986 Proceedings). Clifford Truesdell told Steve, after the music, “When I heard your talk today, I knew you were a musician!” which Steve counted as the greatest compliment he’d ever received.

Every year, usually Steve or someone, would remind everyone that it is also Bastille Day, which Steve also enjoyed.
